FAQ

What kind of books will I get?

Influential but lesser-known works of philosophy. Most of it will be continental philosophy, but the list includes metaphysics, ethics, poststructuralism, postmodernism, environmental philosophy, political philosophy, feminist theory, and phenomenology.

Are you going to send me stuff written by a bunch of dead white guys?

Sometimes! But the texts represent a range of locations, cultures, historical epochs, and schools of thought. Some were written by men, others by women. Some are ancient, others contemporary. Some deal explicitly with race and gender; others don't.

Are the books representative of different schools of thought?

No. Each book is a stepping stone into a larger conversation, not the final word on anything. Think of each text as an introduction, not a conclusion.

Do I get to choose the book or philosopher?

No. Part of the fun is the surprise. Philosophers are selected alphabetically by last name. The goal is to find texts that aren't already on your bookshelf. This means we wouldn’t send you Plato, but might send you Plotinus.

What if I already own the book you send me?

It’s possible, but unlikely. The subscription is designed for folks who have already read a lot of the classics, which means we’ll be avoiding most of the big names. If it does happen, we recommend gifting the duplicate to a friend or donating it to your local library.

Is this a way to get cheaper books?

No. The subscription is about building a great collection of philosophy books and expanding beyond what you typically read. You're paying for the curation, the surprise, and the conversation around the text.

When will my book ship or be ready to pick up?

All books ship or are ready to pick up on the 15th of the following months:

  • July

  • October

  • January

  • April

When will Philosophy Club meet?

Philosophy Book Club will meet on the last Thursday of every month. This means we will have three meetings dedicated to each text. Each meeting will start with a 5-10 minute overview of the author and their work before we open it up for questions and discussion.
